Home, sweet home!

Updated: Feb 3

Today I didn’t travel anywhere! I stayed at home in Kabale all day which was wonderful! Ian and I did a little shopping in the morning, then it was home to play with the children the rest of the day! We played games in the yard area of the compound the children live in including racing to fill a coke bottle with water! We retreated indoors when the rain came!

Another of the games the children played was hopscotch and whilst each child played the others chanted the profession that the child wants to pursue! What a encouragement!

We lost electricity at one point today but it wasn’t off for too long. Last time I visited the power was off for almost three days. That was quite a challenge for me, not being used to living without light (or being able to charge my phone!) but it’s very much part of life here! There are contingencies, however, and in the main living room there is a rechargeable bulb that can be switched on when the power goes. All the cooking is done over small charcoal stoves so the lack of power does not affect that. However, I am completely amazed how the women manage to cook such amazing meals only using charcoal stoves that heat one pan each!

We enjoyed playing with the games I brought them last year and then I introduced them to Top Trumps which was a great hit! (I think Ian enjoyed this very much as he giggled his way to victory in the first game!😆) One of my colleagues at work donated a game of Dobble so I taught them how to play that too! Even the youngest children joined in. 😊 Then finally we played Uno!

During the day, trying to dodge heavy downpours, we also distributed all the school resources to the children as we will be taking the boarders back to school in the morning. They are very excited to be returning to school and are determined to read hard and learn well!

Today was the first time I experienced rain in Uganda. There were a few very heavy downpours! But they were soon over and due to the warm temperature the ground dried fairly quickly, except where puddles had formed.

I gave out gifts that I had brought for the children from myself and sponsors. They were so pleased to receive them and I know they will be very cherished!

At the end of the day, just before going to bed we video called with my parents. It was such a wonderful experience being with the children and speaking to my parents as it's usually me and my parents calling the children and Ian!
